Sometimes when Im sitting on the fire escape, watching the flickering city lights, I think about the deer. In my mind they're gliding silently across tall grass meadows all aglow in silver moonlight.

Misty seemed to sense the important of this moment. She backed away from the group, her head uplifted, not towed the sea and the island of Assateague, but inland, toward the well-pounded trails of Chincoteague. Her whole body quivered as if she saw a promise of great things to come - of races won, of foals tagging at her side. Overcome by all the excited in store, she kicked her heels in ecstasy and let out a high, full whinny of joy. It sounded for all the world like explosive laughter.Paul gave a little gasp."What did she say?" Maureen asked quickly. "I never!" Paul's eyes widened in disbelief. Grandpa clapped his hat far down on his head. "Land sakes,Paulo! You never what?" "Reckon I never heard A pony talk up so plain. Why, she just laughed deep down inside her.'I'm Misty of Chincoteague,' she said, planer'n any words."

"Oh, dear," said Susan. She was as stiff as I was, and she moved slowly as she pushed back the covers, hung her legs over the side of the bed, and finally stood beside me. "Come on back downstairs." I didn't move. Susan smiled. "Oh all right," she said. She shoved a footstool next to me. "Here, use this." She coaxed me into the stool and placed my front paws on the bed. I jumped, and Susan shoved my rump up,and the next thing I knew I was crawling under the covers and Susan was climbing in beside me. We slept together all night. And that is how we have spent every night since then.
